A SURFACE COATED RING AND TRAVELLER ASSEMBLY FOR RING SPINNING AND TWISTING MACHINE

Abstract This invention relates to a surface coated ring and traveler assembly. Either the ring, the traveler or both the ring and the traveler surface are coated with a layer of amorphous hydrogenated carbon known in the art as diamond like carbon. The coating may be effected by plasma chemical vapour deposition.

Conventionally, a new ring is preconditioned to afford naxinun functionality at the desired speed levels before its installation In the machinery. Preconditioning tine and loss of production due to oonsequentlal and unavoidable down timing of the naohine.
Ideal ring and traveller combination in a ring spinning and tHlsitng machine must result in high spindle speed. Whenever a new machine Is cormiasioned with new rings or whenever ring replacenent is required due to wear and tear, a running In period varying from 1 to 32 days is unavoidable till naxinun aplndle speed 1B achieved under ideal conditlone, this running-in-perlod is to be kept to the minimum. Further conventional rings Unit the speed of the traveller and as the life of the traveller is prolonged, yarn quality is deteriorated resulting in end breaks and hairinosB. Yet another draw back noticed while using conventional ring is that the same ring may not be adequate for processing materials of different counts. For Gatlsfying the above discussed ideal condition in ring spinning and twisitng machine, the spinning tension must be limited to

Prom this formula, it 1B clear that to achieve higher spindle and traveller speed to result in naximun production efficiency it is essential to keep the friction to the nlninuii, keep the weight of the traveller to the ninimun while nalntainlng the unit area to keep traveller wear under control and to maintain the angle oL and greater than 30 degrees by carefully selecting the ring dianeter. It is also essential to keep the balloon tension/air resistance to the ninimun possible level by using rings of smaller diameter and tubes of shorter lengths. Ring and traveller assembly must have high wear resitanoe, good heat disBipation characteristics, homogeneous structure, corrosion rosietanoe and easy manufaoturabillty.
Attempts have been made by applying surfaoe coating to the ring and traveller assembly to reduce friction and heat dioBipation capacity. But the coatings hitherto used have not been found to fully satisfy the above referenced requirements and overcome t.he problems associated with conventional ring and traveller aosembly. Conventional coatings hitherto known In the

art, chip off or peel off while in operation, adding to the existing problems.
In order to overcome the problems discussed herein before, a ring coated with amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C colon H) which is known In the art ss diamond like carbon (DLC). DLC 1B preferably coated on the ring using plasma aesisted ohemioal vapour deposition technique. A deposit of about 4 pti thickness is formed on the ring eurfaoe by this technio"ie «hioh is operable at low temperatures.
In a specific embodiment the ring may have an ovality of 0. Inm, roundness of 90inlorons and surface roughness of Ra 0.05 and hardness of 750 to 2000HV. The width of the flange nay be atleast 3.2mn + 0.05-0nm and base flatness is 0.01nB. Hydrogenated carbon film coating has a thleknees of 2 to 3 microns and hardness of 2000 Wmk - 2.
The traveller also may be coated with the DLC using the oane plasma coating process. The coating on the traveller nay preferably have a thickness of 1 to 2 microns and hardness of 1000 to 1500 KV.
Accordingly the Invention relates to a surface coated ring and traveller assembly for ring spinning and twisting machine wherein at least the surfaces of said ring, said

traveller or said ring and traveller assembly have a coating of amorphous hydrogenated carbon film thereon.
Though this invention has been described hereinabove Hlth reference to speoific embodiments, obvious alterations known to persons skilled in the art are within the scope and ambit of the appended claims.


we claim
1. A surface coated ring and traveller assembly for ring Bpinnlng and tuisting machine, wherein at least the surfaces of said ring, said traveller, or said ring and traveller assembly have a coating of amorphous hydrogenated oarbon film thereon.
2. The surface coated ring and traveller assembly as claimed in claim 1, »herein said surface coating on the ring has B thickness of 2 to 3 niorons and the surface coating on the traveller has a thickness of 1 to 2 microns.
3. The surface coated ring and traveller assembly as claimed in claims 1 and 2 nherein said surfaoe ooating is •ffected by plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition prooeos.
4. The surface coated ring and traveller assembly as claimed in claim 3 wherein said ring has an ovality 6f B.lmm, roundness of S0 microns, surface roughness of Ra0.0S and hardness of 750 to 2000HV.
5. The surface coated ring and traveller assembly as olained In claim 4, wherein the flange width of said ring 3,2nn and has a base flatness of 0.0lRm.
6. The surface coated ring and traveller assembly as olained in claim 1 wherein the coating on the surface of said traveller has 1 to 2 microns and hardness of 1000 to 1500HV.

7. The surface coated ring and traveller assembly as clalned In any one of the preceding clalns wherein only the surfacee of the ring have said coating.
8. The surface coated ring and traveller assembly as olained in claims 1 ~ B, wherein only the surfaces of said "traveller have said coating.
9. The Burface coated ring and traveller aasenbly as claimed in claims 1 to 6 wherein the surfaces of said ring and traveller have said coating.
10. A surface coated ring and traveller assembly for ring spinning and twisting naehoine substantially as herein described.
