PRESSURE SWING ADSORPTION PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF HYDROGEN

Abstract A pressure swing adsorption [(PSA)] process for purifying a feed stream containing more than 50 mole % hydrogen, which comprises passing the feed stream at a pressure above atmospheric pressure through a multialyer adsorbent bed, wherein at least one contaminant from the group H2O, N2, CO2, CH4 and CO is adsorbed from the gas stream prior to passing the stream through a layer of naturally occurring zeolite selected from the group consisting of chabazite, erionite, clinoptilolite and faujasite zeolite, or a layer of synthetic zeolite adsorbent having a SiO2/A12O3 ratio [within the range] of 2.0[-2.5] and selected from the group consisting of CaX, LiA, LiX and VSA 6 adsorbent, wherein when the zeolite is CaX, the ion exchange>90% Ca, to adsorb nitrogen in such stream and recovering purified[(>99.9%)] hydrogen as product from the muitilayer adsorbent bed.
