"AN IMPROVED FURNACE FOR MELTING METALS"

Abstract An improved furnace for melting metals which comprises a shell having an upper half and a lower half ,the inside of the said shell being provided with a lining of a refractory material, the inside of the said upper half of the shell being provided with a plurality of baffles (12) which are fixed at different height, characterized in that the top of the upper half of the said shell being provided with a chimney to which an outlet (8) for drawing samples from the shell being fixed, the outer wall of the upper half of the said shell being also provided with an opening (7) above the baffles (12) for charging the material to be melted into the furnace, another opening (6) being provided at the bottom of the lower portion of the upper half of the said shell, a cooling grate (3) and refractory balls (4) such as herein described , being provided at the upper inside portion of the lower half of the said shell in such a manner that the said refractory balls rest on the top of the said cooling grates, lower half of the said shell being also provided below the cooling grate with one or more moveably fixed oil/gas fired burners (2), a blower(9) and pipes(10,ll) also being provided to supply preheated air through an air main (5) to the said burners, the lower half of the said shell also being provided with a chamber for collecting the molten matter and an outlet for discharging the molten matter.

We Claim:
1. An improved furnace for melting metals which comprises a shell having an
upper half and a lower half ,the inside of the said shell being provided
with a lining of a refractory material, the inside of the said upper half of
the shell being provided with a plurality of baffles (12) which are fixed at
different height, the top of the upper half of the said shell being provided
with a chimney to which an outlet (8) for drawing samples from the shell
being fixed, characterized in that the outer wall of the upper half of the
said shell being also provided with an opening (7) above the baffles (12) .:
i for charging the material to be melted into the furnace, another opening
(6) being provided at the bottom of the lower portion of the upper half of
the said shell, a cooling grate (3) and refractory balls (4) such as herein
described , being provided at the upper inside portion of the lower half of
the said shell,in such a manner that the said refractory balls rest on the
top of the said cooling grates, lower half of the said shell being also
provided below the cooling grate with one or more moveably fixed oil/gas
fired burners (2), a blower(9) and pipes(10,ll) also being provided to
supply pre-heated air through an air main (5) to the said burners, the
lower half of the said shell also being provided with a chamber for
collecting the molten matter and an outlet for discharging the molten
matter.
2. An improved furnace as claimed in claim 1 wherein the burners are fixed in an inclined manner, the inclination preferably ranging from 13-20 from the horizontal plane of the shell.
3. An improved furnace as claimed in claim 1 wherein the burners are fixed at a height of 1.5 times the diameter of the chamber of the shell.
4. An improved furnace as claimed in claim 1 wherein the opening (6) being provided at approximately 300-500 mm above the cooling grate.
5. An improved furnace as claimed in claims 1 wherein the opening (7) being provided at a height of 8-10 times the diameter of the shell.
6. An improved furnace for melting metals substantially as herein described with reference to figure 3 of the drawings accompanying this specification.
