Title of Invention | AN IMPROVED CLUTCH FOR AN AUTOMOBILE |
---|---|
Abstract | An improved clutch for an automobile comprising a clutch release member; a pressure plate; a plate clutch drive member; and a plate clutch driven member, the said clutch release member, on an axial force being applied to it, resulting in an axial movement of the pressure plate creating a gap between the plate clutch drive member and plate clutch driven member, to disengage the clutch, characterised in that the said clutch release member consists of an adapter, a ball accommodated within the adapter and a stud fixed to the adapter to hold the ball in place. |
Full Text | This invention relates to a chitch for an automobile, more particularly, though not exclusively, a two wheeler or three wheeler automobile. In two wheeler or three wheeler automobiles the clutch used is generally of the wet muttiplate type. In this type of clutch the power from the engine is transferred to the countershaft through a primary driven member, clutch housing, plate clutch drive member, plate clutch driven member, pressure plate and hub clutch. The chitch is operated by a rod and pin clutch release member. To disengage the chitch a force is applied to the pin resulting in axial inward movement of the pressure plate creating a gap between plate chitch drive member and plate chitch driven member, disengaging the chitch. The drawback with the above mentioned known chitch is that the countershaft is not aligned in line with the pin because: The countershaft is fitted in crankcases where each crankcase is machined separately and the hole CD tolerance is about 0.05 mm; the cover chitch in which the pin is fitted is machmed separately with hole CD tolerance of about 0.05 mm; and in the chitch pressure plate and hub chitch allowed face out are about 0.05 mm. and It is difficult to control the tolerances less than 0.05 mm and it is therefore not possible to have the pin and the countershaft aligned. The misalignment will cause non-uniform application of forces over the pressure plate; the pressure plate to move non-linearly; shudder and noise. This invention proposes a chitch, which eliminates or at least considerably minimises the above-mentioned drawback's associated with the known clutch. The chitch for an automobile, according to this invention, comprises a clutch release member; a pressure plate; a plate clutch drive member; and a plate clutch driven member, the said chitch release in chamber, on an axial force being applied to it, resulting in an axial movement of the pressure plate creating a gap between the plate clutch drive member and plate cluteh driven member, to disengage the chitch, characterised m that the said chitch release member consists of an adapter, a ball accommodated within the adapter and a stud fixed to the adapter to hold the ball in place. This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate In Fig.l a known version of a clutch In Fig.2 one of possible embodiments of the clutch proposed herein, by way of example and not by way of limitation. In Fig.3 an enlarged view of the clutch release member of the said embodiment Fig. 1 illustrates the known version of the clutch. In this type of clutch the power from the engine is transferred to the countershaft 1 trough a prhnary driven member 2, clutch housing 3, plate clutch drive member 4, plate clutch driven member S, pressure plate 6 and hub clutch 7. The clutch is operated by clutch release member comprising a rod and pin 8. To disengage the chitch a force is applied to the pm resulting m axial inward movement of the pressure plate creating a gap between clutch plate drive member and plate clutch driven member, disengaging the clutch. Fig.2 illustrates an embodiment of the clutch proposed herein. The embodiment comprises the components illustrated in connection with the known version m Fig.l excepting that the pin 8 of the clutch release member of the known version is replaced by the clutch release member R which consists of an adapter 9, a ball 11 accommodated within the adapter 9 and a stud 10 fixed to the adapter to hold the ball 11 in place. An enlarged view of the clutch release m ember R is shown in Fig.3. By reason of its construction, just described, the clutch release, member R proposed herein ensures proper alignment with the countershaft 1. The drawbacks associated with the known version of the clutch are thus eliminated or at least considerably minimised. Due to point contact with the mating surfaces, friction is also reduced. From the foregoing description it will be appreciated that various other embodiments of the clutch proposed herein are possible without departing from the scope and ambit of this invention. We Claim: 1. A clutch for an automobile comprising a clutch release member; a pressure plate; a plate clutch drive member; and a plate clutch driven member, the said clutch release member, on an axial force being applied to it, resulting in an axial movement of the pressure plate creating a gap between the plate clutch drive member and plate clutch driven member, to disengage the clutch, characterised in that the said clutch release member consists of an adapter, a ball accommodated within the adapter and a stud fixed to the adapter to hold the ball in place. 2. A clutch for an automobile substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. |
