Full Text This invention relates to a long skein book making machineā€¢
Traditionally, the long skein book is made by twisting the individual skeins tightly and double -fold them. This method of skeinning and book making causes a lot of strain on the yarn and thereby seriously affecting the tensile properties. It damages the silk resulting in more breakages and higher waste. This method of skeinning also deforms the silk t#tich poses problems during further processing. Motorised Icmg skeinning and book making alongwith rotary type silk hanks mounting stands of higher capacity are used only in sericulturally advanced countries.
Therefore the main object of this invention is to propose a long skein silk book making system which comparatively is simple in construction and cheap in costs.
Another object of this invention is to propose a long skein silk book making system which protects the raw silk skeins from wrong handling and retains the quality of silk.
Yet another object of this invention is to propose a long skein silk book making system and wherein the breakages and wastage during winding gets reduced.

According to this invention, there is provided a long skein book making machine comprising: a long skein book making box (1) mounted on the top of the frame (2) of said machine, a screw jack (3) provided below the said book making machine, a turning handle (5) provided at one side of the said frame for operating the said screw jack, a thread placing fork (6) provided at the bottom of said book making box, a long skeinning frame comprising a wooden bar (11) adapted to be placed separately from the said box.
In accordance with this invention long skein book making machine has a silk book pressing box mounted on the frame of the machine. A screw jack is provided below the book making box for raising and lowering the cover of the box for pressing the silk books provided in the book making box. A thread placing fork is provided on one side of the book making box. A turning handle is provided on the same side where thread placing fork is provided for operating the screw jack. The book making box comprises side plates. A MS plate reinforced with wood plank is provided to constitute the cover of said box. Grooves are provided for thread placing in the box. Means are provided for holding the silk scan within the book making box.

A long skein book making machine according to a preferred embodiment is herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein
Fig. 1 shows the side perspective view of the machine and Fig. 2 shows the long skeinning frame.
Referring to the drawings particularly fig.l the long skein book making machine has a book making box 1 mounted on the frame 2 of the machine. Frame of the machine is made of M S angle. A screw jack 3 mounted on a support plate 4 is provided below the book making box 1 for pressing the silk skeins provided in the book making machine 1. A turning handle 5 is provided at one side of the frame 2 for operating the screw jack 3. A thread placing fork 6 is provided at the book making box 1. The book making box 1 comprises side plates 7 made of hard chromed side plates of mild steel. A M.S plate reinforced with wood plank (8) is provided on the top of the side plates so as to constitute the top cover of the book making box 1. grooves 9 are provided for placing the thread.
A long skeinning frame as shown in j5g.2 is provided alongwith the long skein book making box for facilitating the preparation of long skeins book. The long skeinning frame

comprises a wooden bar having holes therein and is adapted to be placed separately. Stainless steel rods 13 are provided in the holes of the wooden bar 11 for making the silk books. Alununium tubes 14 are provided for facilitating skeining operation and placed over the rods 13.
During operation of the machine the silk skeins are taken on a smooth finished stainless
steel rod placed in the holes of the wooden bar and the silk hank is hung on it. The other end of
the silk hank is provided on a aluminium tube as shown in fig, 2 and the hank is twisted 2-3
tunes. The twisted hank in the aluminium tube is passed inside the SS rod placed parallel to the
first SS rod. The aluminium tube is then removed from the rod placing the silk skein on the rodi
Thus 5-6 skeins are placed on each pair of SS rods and for one book 7-8 pair of rods are used
depending upon the number of silk skeins and weight. Initially cotton thread of the count 9 and
60 number of plies are placed in the grooves provided on the side plates so that the thread is
passed through the groove on the second side plate. The thread placing fork is then inserted
above the cotton thread and the thread are made to form a U shape when the fork is placed on the
bottom wooden plank. Now a thick brown packing sheet and a thin tracing sheet of the dimesion
of the box are palced with tracing sheet nearer to silk. The silk

skeins placed on the SS rods are then removed from the holes of the wooden bar by carefully holding all the silk skeins. The rods with sUk are placed on the long skein book making box with top cover of the box in open position and the rods placed outside the side plates. All the 7-8 pairs of the rods has 5 kg silk skeins placed one over the other upto the top of the box, one more set of tracing sheet & brown sheet are placed on the silk skeins. All the five numbers silk book tieing 60 ply bottom thread placed in U shape are taken to the front side and the top cover of the long skein book making box is closed and latched, so that both the ends of the thread are on one place to facilitate easy knotting. The turning handle is operated so that the screw jack is tightened. Now the thread placing fork and the rods are removed from the silk skeins. The screw jack is further tightened upto 15 ends to compress position inside the box. In the same position cotton thread are knotted firmly to retain the silk book in the same condition. The grooves in the wooden plank hold the cotton thread so that after knotting there will not be slackness in the silk book. After knotting the tummg handle is rotated backwardly to loosen the screw jack slowly. The top cover is now opened and the long silk book is carefully removed from the long skein book making machine
