"AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE"

Abstract All internal combustion engine comprises one or more pairs of first and second cylinders (12. 14), the first cylinder (12) having a larger swept volume then the second cylinder (14) and respective Just and second pistons (16, 18) rcciprocable in the cylinders. The second piston (18) has a drive stem (234) anil divides the second cylinder (14) into a first volume (15a) containg the drive stem of the second piston and a second volume (15b) between the two pistons. An air inlet (25) and an exhaust outlet (27) are provided for the first cylinder (12). A common combustion space (20) is formed between the pistons (16, 18) when the pistons are substantially at their inner dead centre positions the combustion space comprising the second vulume. A tansfer means (.39, 128, .391) enables gas How between the first volume (15a) and the combustion space (20) whilst an inhibiting means (128) inhibits the movement of a substantial amount of fuel/air mixture from the first volume into the second volume until towards the end of the compression stroke of the second piston (18). A fuel injector (34) provides fuel yo the first volume during the induction stroke of the second piston. The engine also has drive means for driving the second piston (18), the drive means including means for maintaing the second piston (18) substantially at its inner dead centre position during at least a portior of the expansion stroke of the first piston (16). A restriction in the form of a partition is provided between the first and second cylinders. The partition has an aperture which directs a jet of gas flowing into the second cylinder in a direction to impinge on a crown of the crown of the second piston, generating a toroidal gas flow in the second cylinder.

We Claim:-
1. An internal combustion engine comprising:
at least pair of first and second cylinders (12, 14) said first cylinder (12) having a larger swept volume than said second cylinder (14);
respective first and second pistons(16, 18) reciprocable in said cylinders, wherein said second piston (18) has a drive stem (234) and divides said second cylinder (14) into a first volume (15a) containing said drive stem of said second piston and a second volume (15b) between said two pistons;
air inlet means (25) communicating with said first cylinder (12)'
exhaust means (27) communicating with said first cylinder;
means defining a common combustion space (20) between said pistons (16, 18) when said pistons are substantially at their inner dead centre positions, said combustion space comprising said second volume (15b);
transfer means (39, 128, 391) for enabling gas flow between said first and second volumes (15a, 15b);
inhibiting means (128c) for inhibiting movement of a substantial amount of fuel/air mixture from said first volume (15a) into said second volume (15b) until towards the end of the compression stroke of said second piston (18);
a first fuel source (34) for providing fuel to said first volume (15a); drive means for driving said second piston (18);
and means for inducing swirl in gas flowing from the first cylinder into
the second cylinder;
said means for inducing swirl comprises a restriction (216) between said cylinders having an aperture (2161) for directing a jet of said gas flow in a preset direction;
said aperture (2161) extends in a direction towards the centre of said crown (35) when said second piston (18) is at the top of its stroke, thereby to induce a toroidal gas flow in the flow of gas in saidv combustion space (20), the core of which is formed by said jet of said gas flow.
2 An internal combustion engine as claimed in claim 1 wherein said second piston (18) has a minimum of one vane (700) on its crown (35) to direct gas impinging on said crown in a direction about the axis of said second cylinder (14) and thereby to cause rotation of said toroidal gas flow.
3 An internal combustion engine as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 wherein said restriction (216) is a partition between the first and second cylinders (12, 14), the partition having said aperture (2161) for directing the jet of gas flow in pre-set direction.
4 An internal combustion engine as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein said aperature (2161) directs the jet of gas flow in a direction to impinge on crown (35) of said second piston (18).
5 An internal combustion engine as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein said aperture (2161) extends in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of said second cylinder (14).
6 An internal combustion engine as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 4 wherein said aperture (2161) extends in a direction inclined to the axis of said second cylinder (14).
7 An internal combustion engine as claimed in Claim 5 wherein said direction is aligned with the axis of said second cylinder (14).
8. An internal combustion engine as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein said drive means has means for maintaining said second piston (18) substantially stationary at or adjacent its inner dead centre position during at least a portion of an expansion stroke of said first piston (16).
9. An internal combustion engine substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
