IMPROVED TWIN BOLT VERTICAL LATCH

Abstract An improved twin bolt vertical latcti of enclosed construction opened at the back which is closed by means of a cover (8) with spindle (9) and spindle cam (11) to operate from outside, by authorised key member. The said spindle cam operates two opposing horizontal follower brackets (14)on which mounted is a square rod (13) which is rigidly fixed to the latch bolts. The knob (2) fitted rectangular body U) to operate knob cam (24) from inside. the knob cam (24) while rotating will push the two opposing horizontal follower brackets (14) in similar manner to open the door. The said follower brackets are retained by biasing means (23) which is fixed on the guide rod (22) to retain the latch bolts in its closed position. AH IMPROVED TWI N BOLT VERTICAL LATCH

GODREJ & BOYCE MFG. CO. LTD. of LOCKS DIVISION PLANT-18, PIROJSHANAGAR, VIKHROLI, MUMBAI - 400 079 MAHARASHTRA, India INDIAN Company

The following specification particularly describes the nature of the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed : -

The invention relates to a twin bolt latch, more particularly the invention relates to twin bolt vertical latch fitted to door for opening and closing swing doors, sliding doors and the like.
PRIORART :- The conventional horizontal sliding latch having a single bolt has limited strength and which can be opened forcibly by pushing back / prying thereby the privacy is intruded. The inventor has devised a twin bolt vertical latch which has double protection and the bolt movement is vertical and in opposing directions thereby preventing unauthorized opening even by force from outside.

Accordingly, there is provided an improved twin .bolt vertical latch of enclosed construction consisting a body (1) opened at backside provided with a cover (8) mounted' with a spindle (9) fixed with spindle cam (11) to operate the two opposing horizontal follower brackets (14) sliding on the guide rod (21) from outside by authorized key member. From inside there is provided a knob (2) ratably mounted on body (1), knob fitted with knob cam (24) to operate the two opposing horizontal follower brackets (14). The follower brackets are provided with a square rod (13) which is fitted with bolt member (4), the guide rod (21) is retained with the body (1) by the retainer bracket (20) and (17). Accordingly there are provided follower bracket retainer springs which retain the follower bracket in its closed position.
The said springs are fixed on the spring guide pin (22) which are suitably located on the guide rod (21). The said construction is further provided with an aligning rod (5) rigidly fixed to body which aligns the lock body with receptacle (6) while locking.
The said construction is also provided with a privacy knob (7) on which fitted is a privacy cam (18). The said cam is retained in its position by a privacy cam retainer spring (19). The retainer is plate (10) is provided for facilitating the mounting of the twin bolt vertical latch on the door. The cover (8) is fitted on body (1) by suitable fastening means. Accordingly there is provided a hold open knob (3) fitted with hold open cam (12) for keeping the bolts (4) away from its closed position. The hold open stopper plate (16) is rigidly fixed on follower bracket (14), thereby making the hold open knob operation unidirectional. The privacy stopper pin (15) is rigidly fixed on follower bracket (14).

The invention will now be described with reference to figures 1 to 7 in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1. is the elevation of the improved twin bolt vertical latch.
Figure 2. is the side view of the improved twin bolt vertical latch.
Figure 3. is the exploded view of the improved twin bolt vertical latch.
Figure 4. is the elevation view of the improved twin bolt vertical latch when in closed/ locked position.
Figure 5. is the elevation of the improved twin bolt vertical latch while in opened/ unlocked position.
Figure 6. is the back view of the improved twin bolt vertical latch.
Figure 7. is the top view of improved lock.
Referring to the Figures 1 to 7, the twin bolt vertical latch comprising two latch bolts (4) rigidly fixed on square rod which is fixed to follower bracket sliding on guide rod (21). In its closed position when operated by a knob (2) from inside, which operates the cam (24) to push the two latch bolts away from its initial position to open the lock. The same latch bolts are retained back to its original position by means of follower retainer spring (23) thereby keeping the latch bolts always in closed position. The said springs are fitted on the guide rod (21) with the help of spring guide pins (22). The cover is fixed to the body (1) with the help of fastening means. The same bolts are operated from outside through an authorized key member to open the lock from outside. Lock member can be made from any material and can be made of any shapes and sizes. The retainer plate (10) is mounted on the door on which the lock member is rigidly fitted on the plate by means of fastening means through the holes provided on the body. This device can be used with different types of keys mechanisms such as pin cylinder, single row and multiple row mechanism, lever type mechanism to providing the locking

solution for the door. The receptacle (6) is fitted on the door jam to receive the latch bolt (4) when the door is closed.
The device can be used with different type of key mechanisms such as pin cylinder, single row and multi row mechanism, lever type key, to provide the locking solution for the door.
A specific variant of this improved twin bolt vertical latch is the embodiment which will use a lock operable with key from outside and inside. The knob from inside is replaced by a lock with key in order to provide additional security for the occupant.
This is an embodiment of the invention. Several modifications are possible may be considered within the ambit and spirit of this invention. Since many modifications, variations and changes in detail may be made to the above described embodiments, it is intended that all matters described in the foregoing description as described in the accompanying specification.
