Abstract The Portable Balaveenai comprises of 7 strings tied btween the nagapasam and keys on either sides and running over the bridge and having a total length of 27.5 to 30 inches, wherein, the four strings are in order tuned to madhyastayi panchamam, base sad jamam, mandhra stayi panchamam and mandhara stayi sad jamam with three strings for the thalam tuncd to madharastayi sad jamam mandhara stayi panchamam and thara stayi sad jamam and it has sixteen frets.

The exsisting old Veenai is an ancient musical instrument mainly used for Carnatic Music which is around 50 inches long with 24 frets and a big kudam of 14 inches diameter. Present day Veenai Artists find it difficult for transportation and taking it abroad. So it is attempted to bring the size of the Veenai to 30 inches length for easy transporation which has the same musical characteristics and ghamahasuddham and hence the invention of this Balaveenai.

Balaveenai is 27.5 to 30 inches in length with a hollow kudum of 11 inches in diameter semispherical shape and a dandhi of 9 inches length. Unlike the ordinary Veenai Bala Veenai is played by keeping the Bala Veenai on the laps in siting position with folded legs like padmasanam.
The swarastanams of the fourteen frets in order are Sudharishabam, Chatursruti rishabam, Sadhanarna gandharam, Andharagandharam, Suddhamadhimam prathi madhimam, Panchamam, Sudhadaivadham, Chatursruti daivadham, Kaisikanishadam, Kakalinishadam and uppersadjamam and then upper panchamamin position.
The first string is tuned to the madhyastayee panchamam, second to the base sajamam, third to mantara stayee panchamam and the fourth to the mantrastayi Sajamam. Hence the second string is the main saranai siring which is the base which can be set to D to F and G scales pitch to female voice for accompaning.
All classical, light, folk, Carnatic as well as Hindustani Music ragas. Compositions, musical verses and notes can be played in Bala Veenai with true origionality and sudham.
Bala Veenai unlike other Veenai can be easily transported, can be taken in a kitbag inside a bus or Aircraft.
All styles and paterns of playings Veenai say Tanjavour, Vijanagaram, Mysore can be adopted on Bala Veenai and can also be played in minimum meetu gayaga style.
Cost of Bala Veenai may be vvorkes to Rs. 3500.00 at present against the ordinary Veenai costing Rs. 4000.00

with screws fixed at the bottom ends and are fixed over aluminium plate and frets can
be adjusted and fixed to speak the proper intended swarastanams, wherein, the frets are
tied in suchaway to speak from sudharishabam at the first fret to tharastayi panchamam
at the last frets in asending order of swarastanams.
3. The Portable Balaveenai as Claimed in claim I, wherein the material is special musical
quality fibreglass.
