A POLYVINYL ALCOHOL ALGINATE COMPOSITE MATRIX AND TO A PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION THEREOF

Abstract 57) Abstract:- A process for the preparation of polyvinyl alcohol alginate composite matrix comprising in the steps of preparing a solution of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), followed by mixing the solution with sodium alginate and stirring the mixture while heating at a temperature in the range of 30-45° C; adding a solution of silver nitrate, nitric acid and glutaraldehyde to the mixture; stirring the mixture and curing to obtain films of the composite matrix. This invention relates to a polyvinyl alcohol alginate composite matrix and to a process for the preparation thereof. Synthetic polymers are integral part of contemporary health care. Polymers in various forms finds extensive medical uses such as catheters, wound dressings, containers for biological fluids, etc.. One of the major disadvantages of synthetic polymers is that they often act ms centres for the adhesion of bacteria and their subsequent proliferation leading to infection. Material associated infection has always been focussed as a matter to be Considered seriously. The studies conducted hitherto have thrown much Iight on this problem and measures have been proposed which mainly base on the incorporation of antibacterial agents like antibiotics in the polymer matrices. However, the problems associated with antibiotics are recognised in the art. Silver and its compounds are known to have the abi1ity to inhibit the proliferation of a wide range of disease causing bacteria. Considering this property, silver components have been incorporated into polymeric matrices to impart antibacterial activity.
An object of this invention is to propose a polyvinyl alcohol alginate composite matrix with silver compounds incorporated therein and intended for various applications, like catheters, sutures, etc..
Another object of this invention is to propose a polyvinyl alcohol alginate composite matrix wi th compounds incorporated

therein having the required swellability antibacterial
proporites.

preparing a 1.5 to 5X by weight of a salutiun ai polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), followed by mixing the solution with 0.5 to 1.5%

applicat ions such as a coating agent, a wound dressing material,
etc. .
EXAMPLE 1
1.5-5'/. PVA (molecular weight range 72,000-1,25,000) solution is
mixed with 0.5-1.5'/. sodium alginate and stirred (200-400 rpm) at
o 30-45 C for 20-40 mins. to get a clear solution. To this solution
0.S-2'/ 1 ml of concentrated nitric acid and 0.4-1.2 ml of 2)4
glutaraldehyde. The mixture is stirred briefly and transferred
o into a polyethylene or glass containers and cured at 50-70 C to
get dry fi1ms. The fi1ms are then washed extensively with water
and then with methanol to remove unreacted components 1 ike the
cross-1 inking agent. The fi1ms are then dried in a vacuum over at
o 40-50 C.
EXAMPLE 2
The material is evaluated for its antibacterial effect by studying its interaction with a wide range of gram positive and gram negative bacteria and it is found that the material is highly effective in inhibiting the growth of bacterial strains. The material is also subjected to physico-chemical studies to evaluate its structural features, swellability and mechanical integrity.
