The present invention relates to a herbal hepatoprotective and antihepatotoxic composition The mail' embodiment of the present invention resides in the herbal composition being synergistically effective in curing the ailments of liver. Another embodiment of the present invention resides in a process for preparation of the herbai composition.
Liver is considered to be one of the most important organs of the human body, responsible for maintaining the body's metabolic homeostasis. The liver serves many functions, including regulation of blood volume anr manufacture of certain blood clotting factors, the storage of several substances, including glycogen, copper iron and Vitamin B,2l the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats; production of heat; detoxification, (removing the poisonous effect) of certain foreign substances in the blood; destruction of old red blood cells and formation of bile. Specialised functions of the liver that can be emphasised include processing of dietary amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids and vitamins, phagocytosis of particulate material in the splanchnic circulation, synthesis of serum proteins, bio-transformation of circulating metabolites and detoxification and excretion into bile of endogenous waste products.
The variety of functions performed by the liver makes it vulnerable to a wide variety of metabolic, toxic, microbial, circulatory and neoplastic related diseases. Primary diseases of liver include jaundice, hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver. Secondary diseases of the liver are generally the damages caused in cases of alcoholism, cardiac decomposition, extrahepatic infections and fhe like. Consequences, of a deranged liver are general!} life threatening and often fatal.
The present invention relates to a herbal composition effective in curing ailments of the liver. Ayurveda recommends several medicinal plants as effective in curing liver disorders. Ayurvedic treatises like "'Vaidya Chintamani. Bhava Pvakash Niganthu, Yoga Ratnakara and Charaka Samhita" have references to the herbs capable of being used in the treatment of liver disorders.
The present composition is specifically a hepatoprotective and antihepatotoxic composition and has been derived from plants selected from the families Acanthaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Solanaceae and Nyctaginaceae.

Which part of the plant shall be used in the preparation of the herbal composition depends, on the plant heinjj used. Therefore the invention resides in the selection of the herbs to form the herbal composition exhibiting synergistic properties in curing hepatic ailments. The invention also resides in the amount of eacli ingredient •used in the composition.
Andrographis paniculata is herb growing throughout India and is often referred to as the king of bitters. It is a well known liver protecting agent and contains a diterpene lactone called Andrographolide which is responsible for its hepatoprotective activity.

So/anum nigrum is a small herb belonging to the family Solanaceae, which is found commonly all over India. The whole plant is used for its hepatoprotective properties. Boerhaavia diffusa is a herb belonging to the family Nyctaginaceae, and contains rotenoids, flavones and steroids, besides compound called Punarnavine.

The Rotenoid of Boerhaavia diffusa Phyilanlhus amarus is also commonly found herb throughout India. It is a well known liver tonic, widely used to treat jaundice. It contains bio-active compounds like Phyllanthin and Hypophyllanthin.

The compound Hypophyllanthin contains, methylene dioxy group which is known to enhance th antihepatotoxic activity of rotenoids present in Boerhaavia diffusa.
According to the invention, a herbal hepatoprotective and antihepatotoxic composition comprises :
a) Androgrdphispaniculata 25 -35%
b) Solatium nigrum 20 -30%
c) Phyllanthus amarus 20 -30%
d) Boerhaavia diffusa 15 - 25%
According to the invention a process for preparing a herbal hepatoprotective and antihepatotoxic composite comprises the taking of whole plant of Phyllanthus amarus 20-30% and Andrographi.s paniculata 20-30° cleaning, cutting and chopping them in .a chopping'machine to obtain a mesh size of 5 to 20#, mixing it wn 20-30% of Solatium nigrum whole plant previously powdered in a hammer mill to a sieve size of 30 to 40 -wherein the roots of Boerhaavia diffusa 15-20%o cleaned, crushed are added to synergistically enhance tliL potency of the composition, and finally pulverizing the above composition in a grinder/pulverizer to a mes size of 70- 100-#.
Example 1: A herbal hepatoprotective and antihepatotoxic composition comprises :
a) Andrographispaniculata 30% w/w
b) Solatium nigrum 25%w/w
c) Phyllanthus amarus 25%w/w
d) Boerhaavia diffusa 20%w/w
